Mount Talomo

Sicao, Tamayong, Davao City, Philippines

Mount Talomo also known as Mount Kolelan has an elevation of 2,674+masl. Climbing this mountain is already considered a major climb. This mountain is thought as the guardian of Mount Apo. Its trail is challenging but you’ll get a dose of a virgin rain forest. The mossy forest near its summit is superb and enchanting. One should prepare for the climb since it will require you to manage your water supply from day one to day two. And be ready for the coldness, it is really freezing. You can do trail run for a day or mountain trekking for two days. It will take almost 8 hours to ascend and 6 hours or more to descend. Good thing the new trail is already well maintained and you can already reach the summit before it gets dark, unlike before with the old trail.

Kapayawan Ridge

lake-holon-1Kapayawan Ridge (Ant Farm, Impalutao, Impasug-ong, Bukidnon, Philippines)

The first time I saw photos on this beautiful ridge I thought I saw Mount Pulag. The photo was taken during the drought season so the grass were almost golden brown. It was beautiful. Thus, I decided to trail blaze it and experience the trail, the view and the weather.

Kapayawan Ridge is only accessible thru Ant Farm. Climb fee is about 300 pesos which includes a local guide. From Davao City, you can ride a bus bound to Cagayan and tell the driver to drop you in Impalutao’s Barangay Hall or Elementary School. From there, ask any local for direction to Ant Farm (near BMEG). Impalutao is already 2 hours away from Cagayan so expect that the bus fare is already Cagayan based around 405 pesos.

Trekking time is about 2-3 hours.  If you’ll do trail run you can reach the ridge in less than an hour. And if you plan to spend overnight make sure you are equip with good outdoor gears.

Mount Capistrano

(Sitio Binalbagan, Purok 9, Brgy. Simaya, Malaybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines)

Visible in the highway from Bangcud to Malaybalay, this mountain is not that easy to climb especially for beginners. Though the trail is consider as a minor climb, the uphill, not that clean trail plus the rocks are quite challenging. Standing in the middle of rice field at 900 masl, this mountain is a stunner. Rock formations on top are quite amazing.

Climb fee is just 20 pesos and you can reach this by dropping in Brgy. Bangcud. From Davao City this is just 4-5 hours ride (10 minutes away from Valencia). Since it is already under Malaybalay, bus fare is 395 pesos and motorcycle fare from Brgy. Bangcud to jump off is about 40 pesos.

Trekking time is about 1-2 hours to peak. You can bring gloves and trek pole for extra help in surviving the trek.

The mountain is not well maintained and there are garbage and graffiti on the rocks. Please do your part in not adding to it. It is a beautiful mountain but not protected by trekkers.

Kipilas Falls

Kipilas Falls
Brgy. Kipilas, Kitaotao, Bukidnon, Philippines

One of the waterfalls I fell in love with is this gigantic waterfalls of Kipilas. For twice already, the barangay has been my favorite for outreach program. People are warm and friendly. I was in awe in my first visit. I did not get near to it but I was very wet. This is truly a secret gem of Bukidnon.

How to get here:
From Davao City ride a bus bound to Cagayan then drop in Buda. From Buda you need to trek for 2 hours to Brgy. Kipilas or ride a skylab for 50pesos. Then from Brgy. Kipilas gym you need to trek for less than an hour to get to this majestic waterfalls.

Difficulty of Level:
2 hours walk to Brgy. Kipilas is easy.
1 hour trek to Kipilas Falls is average to difficult depending on which way you’ll choose. I experienced the rocky and super slippery trail but it was worth the effort.

600 pesos – Inclusive of food for two days if you want to stay overnight in the barangay; fare from Davao City to Buda and vice versa (100 bus fare one way); And 50 pesos Skylab fare from Buda to Brgy. Kipilas for one way if you will not walk

Lake Holon: Crater Lake of Mount Parker

It was last year when I first set foot in T’boli, South Cotabato. I was one of the participants of Taklad Tamig Kinse organized by Friends of Holon and Melibingoy (FHM). The two day itinerary we had includes the undisturbed trail to one of the highest peak of Mount Melibingoy (Mt. Parker) in Sitio T’bolok, T’boli, South Cotabato. It was a challenging trek and a memorable one. By then, I fell in love with the Lake and its people.

When, T’boli opened the Kule Trail to Lake Holon, there’s no longer a need to trek to Mt. Melibingoy just to see and experience the full view of its 304 hectare caldera. I am Glad, it left Mt. Melibingoy underrated and protected. That highest peak of Mount Parker is a home to insects endemic only to that place. And there you’ll see a long trail covered with pitcher plants of different sizes.

Today, Lake Holon is one of the most visited lake in Mindanao. In fact, we go there 3 to 4 times a month to bring guests who would like to see the caldera and experience mountain trekking.

To those who would like to experience the enchanted Lake Holon and mountain trekking, we are offering a barkada tour package to this Crown Jewel of the South for only P2200 (Davao Based). Just visit our Facebook page: IndedtedSoul – Trail Adventures.
